What Is HPP (High Pressure Processing) in Pet Food?
HPP is a food processing method that uses extremely high pressure—up to 87,000 PSI—to reduce bacteria in food. The products are sealed in packaging and placed into a pressure chamber filled with water. The pressure is applied evenly to kill certain pathogens, but instead reduces all bacteria. This includes naturally occurring microbes that exist in raw pet foods, which are essential nutrients in an animal’s diet. The intense pressure from HPP alters food at a structural level, changing protein structure, enzyme activity, and cellular integrity–elements that are essential to the true value of raw nutrition.
