The Best Dog-Friendly Summer Activities

What are some fun summer activities for my dog this summer?

Summer is my favorite time of year! School is out, the sun is shining, the days are longer.  It's the perfect time to get outside and enjoy some fun with my dogs. Here are five of my favorite dog-friendly activities to make the most of your summer! It's time to head down to the shore, go on a hike, play in the creek. No doubt you and your pup will have a great time!

1. Head to the Beach!

The beach and hiking would be me 1A, 1B top of list dog-friendly activities! One of my favorite places in the whole word is Hilton Head Island and morning walks on the beach with my pup are the absolute best. Many beaches welcome dogs during the summer, offering the perfect spot for you and your dog to splash in the waves and dig in the sand. Check out Bring for dog-friendly beaches in your area—some even have off-leash zones. Bring a ball or frisbee for fetch, pack plenty of fresh water, and make sure you have some shade for your pup to cool off.

Pro Tip: Always check local regulations for leash rules and clean-up requirements.

2. Hiking Trails

There are so many great hiking trails here in Lancaster, PA! Exploring the trails is one of my favorite ways to spend time with my dog while getting the exercise that both of us need. It's important to choose trails with shade and access to water, like streams or lakes, to keep your dog cool. Bring Fido is another great resource to find the dog-friendly paths in your area. Many National and state parks often have dog-friendly paths, make sure to check specific policies before heading there. A sturdy leash and a harness are must-haves, along with waste bags to keep trails clean.

Pro Tip: Start with shorter hikes if your dog isn’t used to long treks, and check their paws for cuts or debris after the hike.

3. Dog Park Picnics

This is perfect for a Saturday afternoon or an after work activity. Dog parks are great for a summer picnic. Even parks with a big grassy area work fine too, as long as you are able to keep your dog leashed or they are trained well enough to stay close. Pack a blanket, some dog treats, and a portable water bowl for your pup, and don't forget some snacks and water for yourself! Many dog parks have shaded areas and benches, making them ideal for the perfect dog-friendly activity. Your dog can socialize and play off-leash while you enjoy the outdoors.

Pro Tip: Bring this Jasonwell foldable dog pool from Amazon along for extra fun! I have this exact pool and my dog loves splashing around in it.

4. Outdoor Movie Nights

The town I live in hosts dog-friendly outdoor movies screenings in the park every summer. An outdoor movie-night is a fun way to relax with your dog while enjoying a movie under the stars. It is a great family event for our pup and kiddos. Bring a blanket to cuddle up and watch the movie on, and don't forget the snacks!

Pro Tip: Practice calm behavior with your dog in crowded settings beforehand to ensure they’re comfortable.

5. Paddleboarding or Kayaking

Is your dog a water-loving dog like mine!? Paddleboarding or kayaking are two of the most fun activities you can do with your water-loving dog. My dog could spend hours on the paddleboard on a beautiful summer day. Many rental companies offer dog-friendly equipment, and calm lakes or slow-moving rivers are perfect for beginners. Equip your dog with a canine life jacket for safety, and start with short sessions to get them used to the board or boat.

Pro Tip: I always take treats with me as a reward for my pup staying calm on the water, and bring a towel to dry them off afterward.

Final Thoughts

Before heading out, ensure your dog is up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/tick prevention, as summer outings increase exposure to other animals and insects. Always carry water, a first-aid kit, and waste bags. With a little planning, these activities will create unforgettable memories for you and your dog this summer. Summer is around the half-way point and my dog and I have already checked off several of these dog-friendly activities. We can't wait to see how you will enjoy the summertime with your pup.
